A few months ago, during my great blogging silence, we were having a bit of a hard time with Nick. Most of my days were spent trying to redirect him, keeping him calm and trying to keep everyone in the family from strangling him with his almost normal teenage attitude. Today, I marvel at how he managed to survive.
On one particular day, he had no intention of following any directions. He didn’t see the need to pick up his dirty dishes, to clean his room, or put away his clothes. Usually when he does do these things, I help as he is easily overwhelmed and often doesn’t know where to start or what to tackle next. But on this occassion, he was determined not to do a single thing asked of him.
I did what any normal mom would do. I sat down on a chair, and continued to harp on him, figuring he would eventually do what he needed to do just to get mom to shut up and leave him alone.
I could see the anger building with each word I spoke, and Nick was really trying to ignore me. Finally, he clearly had enough of me as he spun around and said the worst thing he could possibly think of to get rid of me, without saying something that would get him grounded.
“Aaaaaarggggh! Why don’t you go knit a sock!”
I don’t know how I made it into the other room without bursting out in laughter.

What a moment!…hehheh…

Well, that’s the kinda of teenage insult a mom can handle. Love it…

Very creative comeback/insult! He knew he had to shut you up somehow and figured a sock would be about the right length of time. “Why don’t you go knit a sweater,” “Why don’t you go knit an entrelac afghan,” and “Why don’t you go knit a wedding ring shawl” would be stepping up the insult a bit.
At least he’s been paying attention to your knitting and knows that socks keep you quiet!
