8 Random Things About Me

I’ve been tagged!
Daily Stitches wants me to list 8 random things about myself.

1. I cannot seem to stop being creative…. you know about the spinning, weaving, dyeing, knitting and crochet, but other creative pursuits include gourmet cooking, painting with watercolors, pen and ink drawings, pencil sketches, sewing… well, you get the idea.

2. I used to be multi-lingual. I grew up speaking both English and German, (my mother was born in Austria and didn’t come to the states until she was a teenager) but stopped speaking in German when I was about 4 or 5. I studied Spanish in Middle and High School for a total of 5 years and was nearly fluent, but haven’t used it since and have pretty much forgotten what I haven’t put to use.

3. I long to live somewhere that isn’t a big city, or a suburb. The mountains would be nice, somewhere quiet, slightly rustic and peaceful. I find as I get older, I have more of a desire to be a little bit more “alone” in the world. I’m not saying that I wouldn’t want people around, just not as many as I have now. It would be nice to look out a window and see a meadow, or a grove of trees instead of houses lined up next to each other.

4. I haven’t started a garden this year. I feel guilty about this as the garden has been a great source of inner peace for me, plus it’s fresh food that barely cost anything to eat and I don’t have to drive to go and get it. I do have my herb plants still growing and I have my own little bay leaf tree that I grow in a pot, but nothing in the vegetable department.

5. Next to being creative, I find my biggest stress reliever to be the sounds of nature. Early in the morning I listen to a symphony of birds. All I have to do is close my eyes, breath and listen. I wish we had a creek nearby, I would go and sit beside it just to hear the water babble.

6. I am overly sensitive. The littlest things get to me, especially in the news. I actually feel emotional pain when I find out about something horrible that was done to someone, and sometimes when it is a story that the news agencies just can’t seem to stop reporting on, I find myself shutting down. I turn off the television, drift away from online activities and stay very close to home. I suppose you could say that I isolate myself to try and regain some inner balance. I would save the world all by myself if I could.

7. I don’t like all the concrete and asphalt around me. I’m not a big shoe person, and prefer shoes that are comfortable if I have to wear them. Most often you will find me barefoot, squishing the dirt or the grass between my toes. Somehow this makes me feel more grounded, at peace and connected to the natural world.

8. I am the family memory keeper. As a child, I was always a bit “odd” as I loved to listen to the adults telling stories of when they were growing up, or what my parents did when they were my age. I could listen for hours about the journey my grandmother took from New Mexico to California when she was so much younger than I am now. Until I traveled to the UK, this was the only history that fascinated me. Now that most of the older generation of my family is gone, I have the stories to share and now and then someone calls to ask about one of them.
