So, is one of these the right guess, and how many people were correct?

Yes.. and two people nailed it right on the head…. So now I have to tell you how this all started before I reveal any more…. don’t you just hate me for dragging this out?

A couple of days before the contest, Melanie and I were talking.. and she was looking at the photos of my stole progress on my blog.. then she blurted out.. “it looks like you’re twisting your knit stitches“. She realized what she had said, was worried mostly that she might have hurt my feelings, we emailed some photos back and forth for a closer look and sure enough… I’ve been a unique knitter for many years now.. or as she has called it “Christine’s Global Knitting .. Eastern knit and Western purl”.

Now I could have cried.. having made it so far through the stole… but I couldn’t do anything but laugh as it explained so much in my knitting… gauge… pulling stitches.. ladders.. I could go on, really! But I learned to knit out of a really old obscure book eons ago, stopped for a while and started back up many years later.. so more than likely, I did it the way I remembered, which obviously wasn’t the way I should have remembered! I spent a weekend re-teaching myself how to do knit and yarn over’s correctly, and have restarted the Mystery Stole from the beginning….

Funny thing… it looks a heck of a lot better! Moral of this story.. even an old gal can learn new tricks.. and nothing beats honesty in a friendship!

Now for our winners…

Darlene in Maine and Denise from Irish Lace! Congratulations!

The funniest part, both of these sweet and eagle eyed ladies were concerned more about my knitting than winning the contest, but win they did! I will be contacting both of you privately and forwarding your email addresses on to Melanie.. and for everyone that did enter.. Thank you so much for all of your wonderful guesses! I know I didn’t make it easy on you!

And a special thank you to Melanie for putting up the prizes out of guilt for pointing out my unique knitting tendencies…..

(pssst. Keep a watch on the MS 3 list… I can’t really say much, but I’m pretty sure that there is something else cooking up! Don’t tell Melanie that I said anything!)

  1. Hi Christine! I found your blog via Melanie’s blog, and this is my first visit, but I just had to say that I was doing the same thing with my knit stitches for about a year… it’s funny because everyone keeps saying how they were PURLing twisted or something but nobody ever seems to knot be able to KNIT correctly! I finally figured this out when I was making something in a lace pattern with a lot of YOs and ended up having to use size NINE needles instead of size FOUR to get gauge since I was twisting all of my YOs! Anyway, it’s nice to know that I am not alone

  2. Hi! I wish I had happened upon your contest in time, just because I also used to knit twisted. I don’t recall how I found out and changed over, but I found a sweater I knit while I was in college that has a body with twistes stitches and sleeves that are knit straight. Go figure!

Glad to hear you are at peace with your knitting.

  3. Oh, sweetie!! I feel for you, but as you can tell from the comments so far, you are not alone! Count me among this twisted group, as well, as I figured out (nearly 20 years after I learned to knit) that I was purling “wrong” that whole time. But… I relearned it and all is well!

The speed bumps along the way just keep us from crashing headfirst into a wall, I guess

    :)

  4. I would have never guessed…

  5. Hi, I looked and looked and looked, too and could not make out anything. In the Irish hiking scarf closeup I thought, it looked different from other pictures of this same pattern, but it still did not jump me in the eye, why? I did this myself, and now will relearn the knit stitches untwisted.

Funny, I have learned knitting from my grammy, and she twisted the knit and purl stitches, but I only twist the knit ones, so I gues I remembered ‘right’ how my grammy did it ‘wrong’ :-)

Well, the knit garments of the past will be uique in their way and the ones from the future will be untwisted.

    knit on, nana.

  6. WOW!! I stared myself cross-eyed and never would have guessed. And now you’re someone I like better because of their foibles! I’m absolutely amazed at how you had a problem you didn’t know about, that was causing you other headaches (gauge, etc as you mentioned), yet you still persevered and made All.These.Gorgeous.Things. That’s dedication! And talent.
Now you get to go on, and there won’t be anything you can’t do since you’ve got that straightened out.
As for Melanie, faithful are the wounds of a friend. Way to go!It takes a *real* friend to speak up in order to help. I’m so thankful for people in my life who’ve had the courage to point out my mistakes in kindness, and with the intention of helping me do better.
    Happy Knitting!
    Bekah

  7. I learned how to knit in 8th grade (30 years ago!!!!) and I made this gorgeous yellow and white afghan with cables. Every stitch in it is twisted!!! I don’t even remember who figured it out or dared tell me! Fortunately I was just a pup, so the old dog thing didn’t apply! Congratulations for changing your ways so easily!

  8. I looked and looked and looked at these pictures over several days and didn’t pick it – I couldn’t even come up with a plausible guess LOL. Congrats to the winners :-)

  9. Well it’s nice to know that i wasn’t the only one doing this! I recently figured out that I was twisting my stitches – both knit AND purl – because I was knitting continental!

Fortunately, I figured it out before I got to the MS3 – but I never noticed the purling problem because I mainly do socks!

Welcome to a whole new world. :-)

    D.

  10. Ya know, I was looking and looking and looking… and could not find a darn thing!
